There was an increase in rainfall activities and intensity countrywide during the current dekad. Eldoret airport station in Rift valley region received the highest amount, recording 82.6mm compared to 56.4mm reported in Eldoret Kapsoya station, in the same region, in the previous dekad. Kakamega station in Western region recorded the second highest amount of 81.2mm. Nyahururu station, in Central region reported 60.9mm as the highest in the region.
Lamu and Kisii stations recorded 43.2mm and 31.4mm respectively, being the highest amounts in the Coastal and Nyanza region. In Nairobi region, the highest amount of 30mm was recorded at Wilson airport station.
Most stations reported an increasing trend in maximum temperatures, with stations in the Coastal region recording a decrease. Minimum temperatures also reported an increasing trend with a few stations recording a decrease. Lodwar station in the Rift Valley region still reported the highest temperature of 33.6C. This was a slight increase from 33.3C recorded in the previous dekad at the same station. Nyeri station in Central region still recorded the lowest maximum temperature of 19.1c compared to 19.2C recorded in the previous dekad.

Vacancies


A vacancy has arisen at the British High Commission for an Internal Communications Officer in the Communications Unit. This job is graded at LE II for which the current salary starts at Kshs.156,655/- per month before tax. Where the successful candidate is not liable to Kenyan tax, the salary will be abated under HM Treasury regulations to Ksh. 115,786/- per month to take account of the tax they would have paid.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communications Unit within the British High Commission promotes the Corporate Vision of UK Mission in Nairobi, raising awareness & understanding amongst staff, on all aspects of the functions and activities of the office.
The main duties include:-
  • Launching an online internal communications tool, an intranet that all staff can use.
  • Developing, managing and implementing an intranet strategy, ensuring that it remains useful for staff, up to date, and accurate.
  • Writing and editing content for the intranet.
  • Championing the use of SharePoint and Intranet.
  • Developing other communications tools for internal communication, such as a staff newsletter, team briefings, notice boards, etc.
  • Working with managers to promote effective internal communication and staff engagement, including with Corporate Services.
  • Monitoring and evaluating outputs, including liaising with staff and checking staff survey results to ensure that internal communications meet the needs and requirements of staff.
  • Ensuring that the Mission’s corporate identity is applied consistently throughout the organisation, including in reception areas.
  • Supporting the work of the broader Communications Unit, and deputising for webmasters as appropriate.
Required Skills:
  • Proficiency in the use of Ms Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite i.e.  Photoshop and Corel Draw.  
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint, website & content management, will be an added advantage.
  • Good written communication and editing skills.

Objective of the position

The aim of the ‘Web editor’ internship is to revise and update the information about Terre des Hommes Netherlands’ work and projects on the regional website www.terredeshommesnl.org/en/east-africa, in line with the website’s main objective to share information and create visibility of Terre des Hommes Netherlands and its local partners.
This internship position is for the duration of 3 months to start with, with optional extension after evaluating this new role by the Regional Office East Africa.

Position within the organisation

Is responsible to the Regional Communication Officer of Terre des Hommes Netherlands East Africa in Nairobi. Works occasionally with the programme staff of the Regional Office East Africa, and liaises if needed with the Head Office staff responsible for online communication.  

Responsibilities and Results

Ensuring site content is accurate
·         Managing site content: updating existing content and producing new content.
·         Writing, editing and proofreading content (text and images).
·         Uploading and publishing content (through online content management system).
·         Creating a planning for regular updating of the site content.
Ensuring the image library is up to date
·         Classify, label and store all footage (photos and movies) in an orderly manner on the server.
Assisting in producing/developing other communication means
·         Ensuring new site content is shared for possible use in other communication means, both within the region as well as outside the region (HO communication within The Netherlands).
·         Giving feedback on existing ways of communication, and developing suggestions for improvement.

-          College graduate in communications, journalism or multimedia.
-          Experience in web content management (including working with content management software), writing and editing for the web, basic graphic design and site management.
